The Oregon Humanities Conversation Project series will continue with the next
presentation set for July 13, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, at the Coos History Museum.
The Oregon Humanities Conversation Project brings Oregonians together to talk
across differences, beliefs, and backgrounds about important issues and ideas.
Guest speaker Surabhi Majahan will present the program entitled on Friday – July 13, at 6:00 pm. “What is Cultural Appropriation?” Issues of cultural appropriation and identity are complicated. Power dynamics influence who benefits from certain cultural experience, and—given the global nature of our world—parts of our individual and cultural identities are shaped by cultures other than our own. How do we make sense of this and what effect does it have on us as individuals and as Oregonians? Facilitator Surabhi Majahan will lead the conversation to explore cultural appropriation beyond who is “allowed” to wear certain clothing or cook particular foods.
